The Civil Provisions of the Treaty of Limerick were completely ignored. They might never have existed. The period from the Treaty to the Catholic Relief Act of 1778 was a period of absolute rule, of political, economic, and social domination of Ireland, by the 'Protestant Ascendancy' - the great Williamite Protestant landowners who were now proceeding to enclose large tracts of land, establishment Protestant clergy, and professionals.
